On a weekend when Maree/Oranmore went clear at the top of the Premier Division with a comfortable success over West United, the other noteable features were the defeats of top flight Mervue United and Hibernians to lower division opposition in the FAI Junior Cup.
Salthill Devon and University of Galway advanced in contrasting styles, while St Bernard’s, Tuam Celtic, Athenry, Colga, Colemanstown United and Dynamo Blues also all advanced to the next round.
The draw for the 3rd Round has paired the last two remaining city sides together as last season’s beaten semi-finalists Salthill Devon will host University of Galway on the first weekend of November.
Two Premier Division teams will go head-to-head as Colga will welcome St Bernard’s, while Athenry will not have it easy in an away tie against Dynamo Blues. The remaining game will see Colemanstown United at home against Tuam Celtic.
FAI JUNIOR CUP
Salthill Devon 5
Renmore 0
As Dermot Coll, Martin Greaney, Owen Noone, and Eoin Keane watched from the sidelines at this FAI Junior Cup Second round tie in Drom on Friday night, the minds of the former Renmore players must have meandered back to better days as league honours and cup conquests were all part of their success.
Time moves on and after a few years in the wilderness, the side under the management of Stuart Donoghue are back in the Premier Division, and they shocked the champions with a 2-1 win on the second weekend of the season, but Devon got emphatic revenge on Friday.
